HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
Discover how our story began and the milestones that shaped our mission.
Origins of Our Church
In the mid-1970s, the Ikosi-Ketu area grew rapidly after the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was built. Many families, including Anglican Christians, moved to the region. Since there was no Anglican church nearby, families traveled long distances to worship in Lagos Island, Ikeja, and Yaba. Therefore, a group of pioneers decided to establish a local church.
The First Steps (1978-1979)
In April 1978, thirteen dedicated members contributed ₦1,526.60 to build a temporary worship structure. By mid-June, the wooden and iron-sheet building was nearly complete. Unfortunately, the state authorities demolished it, which was a significant setback. However, the pioneers remained determined and continued their mission.
Securing Support from All Saints Yaba
The group then sought guidance from Rev. Canon Clement A. Akinbola of All Saints’ Church Yaba. With his support, they used a block-making shed in Ikosi as a temporary worship site. On 11 March 1979, the first service was held, attended by 113 worshippers. During this service, the first Church Committee was formed, with Mr. R.B. Osunkoya as Chairman and Mr. S.O. Oladogba as Secretary.
Early Worship Milestones
Following the first service, the congregation celebrated several milestones:
25 March 1979: First Holy Communion
15 April 1979: First baptism
25 November 1979: First Adult Harvest Thanksgiving
These events strengthened the church community and inspired continued growth.
Building a Permanent Church
By the end of 1981, the congregation had grown significantly. Then, on 31 December 1981, the new church building on Ikosi Road was officially opened. Despite ongoing construction challenges and the threat of another demolition, the community persevered.
Support from the Mother Church
All Saints’ Church Yaba provided material and spiritual support. They donated pews, the pulpit, and a baptismal font. Additionally, priests and society members visited regularly to guide the young congregation. Consequently, the Ikosi-Ketu church developed strong foundations.
The Legacy Today
Today, All Saints Anglican Church Ikosi-Ketu thrives as a vibrant place of worship. Rooted in faith, community support, and perseverance, the church continues to impact lives and nurture spiritual growth.
